There has recently been commentary on the temporary closure of the 24 hour ‘express zone’ in Bank of Melbourne’s Footscray branch. This zone is an unrestricted access area that’s open 24 hours, which means that it’s sometimes used as a place of shelter by some locals. The zone was closed to ensure the safety of our staff, customers, and members of the local community, some of whom had experienced aggressive behaviour and intimidation while trying to do their banking.

The express zone re-opened at 9.30am this morning, along with the rest of the branch. Bank of Melbourne apologises for the wording on the sign that was displayed in the express zone during the closure.

Bank of Melbourne recognises the serious plight of homelessness in Victoria. We have been working with community organisations to help the individuals using our premises.

We believe it is our obligation to assist where we can but also to ensure our Footscray branch is a safe environment for our people to work and the community to bank in. Since Bank of Melbourne was launched in 2011, it has supported Victorians in need through Melbourne City Mission’s Sleep at the ‘G fundraising event and organisations like Good Cycles, Fitted for Work, Bendigo Foodshare, St.Kilda Gatehouse and Women’s Property Initiatives through its charitable foundation, the Bank of Melbourne Neighbourhood Fund.
