What’s changing

Business Customer Access Numbers, known as Business CANs, are shared logons currently used to access business accounts through internet and phone banking.

From 12 March 2027 they'll be removed, and each person who needs access will use their own individual logon instead.

Setting this up may take a little time, so it's worth starting early - and it means account access is always linked to the person using it, helping keep your business banking secure.

What you need to do

Step 1: Confirm who needs access

Start by listing everyone who needs access to your business accounts. This may include people who make payments, manage direct debits, complete transactions, view account information, or support your business - such as a bookkeeper, accountant, treasurer, office holder or employee.

Step 2: Check each logon now - and start the signatory process if required

Already has an individual logon - check they can see the business accounts

If they already have their own individual logon and are an account holder or signatory, ask them to sign in or register for internet banking and confirm they can see the business accounts. Not sure? Test their logon or register for internet banking by visiting Register for Internet and Mobile Banking.

No individual logon yet - start setting them up now

If someone needs to access or manage your accounts online who is not a signatory, you’ll need to complete the “Add a signatory process” giving them the authority to operate your account, in all channels including internet and telephone banking.

Before you begin, the new signatory must be identified by us and have an individual customer profile created. Contact your Relationship Manager or visit your nearest branch for help. For information about our identification process and what to bring, visit Customer Identity Check.

To begin adding a signatory, simply call us on 13 82 66 or reach out to your Relationship Manager. Our bankers will walk you through the process.

Find your nearest branch and book an appointment with our team. Remember our Bank of Melbourne customers can use our Westpac branches to complete identification and create customer profiles.

Step 3: Set up payment details under an individual logon

Payment details set up under a Business Customer Access Number  (CAN) won't transfer across, and scheduled payments set up under a Business CAN will be cancelled.

To keep payments running on time, set up any payment details you still need under an individual logon before 12 March 2027 - including scheduled payments, payee details, BSB and account numbers, and individual payee limits.

It's a good opportunity to review and remove any payment details you no longer use. For a step-by-step guide to setting up regular payments and scheduled transfers visit Regular payments and scheduling transfers.
